After landing in Colombo, we stayed 2 nights in Negombo, which is very close to the airport.
And it was a very good decision.
Even though the time difference is only +3.5 hours, after a long journey your body still needs time to adjust – not just to the time zone, but also to the heat, humidity and overall pace of Sri Lanka.

Negombo is perfect for that.
Why start your Sri Lanka trip in Negombo
- it’s only 20-30 minutes from the airport
- no long transfer right after landing
- easy, relaxed vibe
- a good mix of accommodation options
- a soft, gentle start to the trip
It’s not the most spectacular place in Sri Lanka – but that’s exactly why it works so well at the beginning.
What we did in Negombo with kids
We did explore a bit, but very much in a slow, easy way.
We went to the beach – and yes, it’s not the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka, but honestly… a beach is a beach. Warm water, first swim, and that “ok, we’re on holiday now” feeling.
We also visited the fish market. We got there a bit later than planned, so it was already quite empty – but a local guy approached us and ended up giving us a really great little tour.
The only mistake: we didn’t agree on the price beforehand and paid way too much at the end… but well, you live and learn 😂

The funny part is that it didn’t stop there – he called his cousin, who is a fisherman, and we ended up going on a small boat trip on the lagoon.

We saw mangroves, monkeys, beautiful birds… and at one point the guide literally spotted a fish from the boat and just grabbed it with net. I still don’t know how he did that 😂
Where to stay in Negombo
We stayed at Steps Garden Resort, and it was a really nice place for the first days.
- small houses in a green setting
- a pool
- good breakfasts
- a bit outside the main area (which we liked)
The standard is rather basic, but it felt calm, easy, and exactly right after a long journey.

And from there, you’re ready to go further 🙂
Here whole post about our Sri Lanka trip.
