Berlin with kids – Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek
Now that the weather’s getting colder and rainier, I’m constantly looking for places where we can spend time indoors – cozy, creative, and ideally free. And it might sound a bit unexpected, but the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) is exactly that kind of place – one that definitely deserves a spot on your rainy-day list in Berlin. Why? Let me tell you 😊
Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek – a little bit of history
The AGB is part of the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin (ZLB) – the central library network that unites what used to be East and West Berlin libraries after the Wall.
The AGB itself was built in the 1950s as a gift from the United States, symbolizing freedom and access to knowledge.
(It’s a bit like how Berlin has two zoos – one from the West, one from the East – a reminder of the city’s divided past.)
Why the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek is perfect for families
Besides being home to Germany’s largest children’s and youth library (KiJuBi) with more than 130,000 books and media, you’ll also find an impressive program for all ages – from toddlers to teens.
If you’re looking for books in other languages, the KiJuBi has a great selection, too.
And if you’re missing a particular title, you can even suggest it for purchase – how amazing is that?

Fun things to do at the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek with kids
There’s so much more than books!
The library regularly hosts creative workshops, Gaming Fridays, and special holiday programs such as the Summer Reading Challenge or Herbstferien activities.
You can check their upcoming autumn program here and here are my favorites from the Herbstferienprogramm:
Gaming & Pen-and-Paper (Dungeons & Dragons)
For teens and older kids who love fantasy worlds and storytelling – this workshop brings imagination to life! Players team up, solve challenges, and create adventures together. A great way to spend a creative afternoon away from screens.
Musik programmieren mit Sonic Pi
How cool is this? Kids and teens can learn to create their own music through simple coding. It’s an inspiring mix of technology and creativity – and a fun way to explore programming for beginners.
Schablonendruck auf Stoff (Stencil Printing on Fabric)
A hands-on workshop where kids can design and print their own tote bags or T-shirts. Perfect for little artists who like to bring something home from their creations.
Häkeln lernen und Geschichten hören
A calm, cozy activity for children from around 8 years – they can learn basic crochet techniques while listening to stories about nature and plants. Such a lovely slow-time idea for the holidays!

Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek – support for young readers
Children can also come to do their homework or get help from educators on site.
There’s even a Lesetraining program – short 15-minute reading sessions for kids who want to practice reading German aloud with support.
As an expat parent, I find this especially valuable – I know firsthand how tricky German pronunciation can be, not to mention teaching it to kids.
Digital Learning
You can also explore interactive reading tools like Tiptoi, Bookii, or SAMi the reading bear, as well as Ozobots and Edurino games that introduce programming and digital learning in a playful way.
Special spaces in Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek
In summer, the Atrium Garden becomes a peaceful reading oasis surrounded by flowers and birdsong.
In winter, something truly special appears: a real Mongolian Jurte (yurt)! Inside this round tent, storytellers from around the world share tales and legends during the “Wortschätze – Story Hours in the Jurte” series. These events are free, and children can register online. It’s a magical experience you shouldn’t miss.

Sounds cool? I know 🙂 But how to become a member of Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek?
Joining the library couldn’t be easier! Here’s how to do it:
You just walk into the library with your ID or passport and your registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). Address: Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB), Blücherplatz 1, 10961 Berlin (U1/U6 – Hallesches Tor)
Go to the information desk and simply say you’d like to register – it takes about five minutes (the most).
Adults pay €10 per year, students and trainees €5, and kids and teens join for free!
If you ever forget to bring a book back on time, don’t panic – late fees are:
€0.10 per item per day for children’s materials and €0.25 for adults.
You can easily extend your loan online through the VÖBB portal before the due date.
Once you have your library card, you can use it in all Berlin public libraries(!!!), borrow books, movies, games, and even explore their digital platforms (to borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines) like Libby and Onleihe – I actually discovered those only recently, and believe me – they’re game changers!
Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek – your kids-friendly gem in Berlin
So if you’re looking for a warm, creative place to spend a rainy afternoon (but of course not rainy too!), the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek might surprise you. Whether it’s reading in a cozy corner, joining a fun workshop, or just letting the kids explore – it’s one of those places that remind you how family-friendly and inspiring Berlin can be.
