Achterhoek with kids – the perfect dutch getaway

Achterhoek with kids – the perfect dutch getaway:

Tucked away near the German border, Achterhoek is a hidden gem in the Netherlands that completely charmed us with its welcoming atmosphere, stunning landscapes, and an abundance of family-friendly activities. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or simply great food, this region has something for everyone. Here’s a breakdown of our incredible trip by accommodation, attractions, and food to help you plan your own visit!

Achterhoek with kids – where to stay:

🏠 Ferienpark De Twee Bruggen

If you’re traveling with kids, Ferienpark De Twee Bruggen is the perfect base. Our cozy cabin fit all five of us comfortably, and the park itself is a mini paradise. From playgrounds and a swimming pool to an on-site bike rental and a restaurant, everything you need is right there. Plus, a scenic riverside path is just a short walk away, making it easy to enjoy the natural beauty of Achterhoek.

The holiday park offers:

  • Spacious, well-equipped cabins for families
  • supermarket on-site for convenience
  • Direct access to biking trails
  • swimming pool and kids’ activities
  • An info center for exploring the area

Whether you want to explore or just relax, this place is a fantastic choice for families!

Top Family-Friendly Attractions

🎟️ Nationaal Onderduikmuseum
We started our adventure with this fascinating history museum, where we learned about the region’s WWII past. It’s a great spot for families, with interactive exhibits and quiz booklets to keep kids engaged while learning.

🎢 Adventure Park Hof van Eckberge
This park is an absolute dream for kids and adventure lovers! It combines playgrounds, an animal park, and a fantastic adventure golf course all in one. We even tried Laser Tag—and while I wasn’t the best (I forgot to press the shoot button 😅), we had so much fun!

🚴 Biking & Hiking Trails
Achterhoek is a paradise for cyclists, and we took full advantage! My husband and son explored MTB trails, renting bikes directly from our holiday park. Meanwhile, the girls and I went on a scenic hike near Ziegenbauernhof de Brömmels, surrounded by golden autumn landscapes.

🐐 Ziegenbauernhof De Brömmels
This charming goat farm was a major highlight! We walked with the goats (one was sweet, another was quite mischievous 😆) and enjoyed a tasting platter of fresh goat cheese and milk.

🌲 Klimbos Ruurlo
If you love adventure, this ropes course in the forest is a must! With different trails for all skill levels, even my youngest could join. My husband and older kids tackled the high ropes and bungee jump, making for an adrenaline-packed experience.

Where to Eat: Delicious Food for the Whole Family

☕ Theehuis de Busker
After a morning of exploring, we indulged in a traditional Dutch high tea at this cozy tea house. The selection of sweet and savory treats was delightful, and the warm scones were definitely the highlight! The owners were incredibly welcoming, making it even more special.

🍽️ Bertram Bredevoort
For dinner, we visited this warm and cozy restaurant, which served delicious, comforting food—exactly what we needed after a day of exploring.

🌿 Suzie’s Farm
One of the most family-friendly restaurants we visited! It has a kids’ menu, playroom, and a welcoming atmosphere. The food was fresh and flavorful, making it a great spot for both adults and kids to enjoy.

🥞 De Heikamp
On our final day, we wrapped up our trip with delicious pancakes at De Heikamp. The restaurant is super kid-friendly, with coloring books, a children’s menu, and an outdoor playground. If you have time, check out the nearby Liefdespad hiking trail for one last scenic walk before heading home!

Final Thoughts: Achterhoek, We’ll Be Back!

Our trip to Achterhoek completely exceeded our expectations. From its stunning natural landscapes and rich history to delicious food and fun activities, it’s a destination perfect for families who love adventure, culture, and relaxation. If you’re looking for a less touristy, more authentic Dutch experience, put Achterhoek on your list!

Thank you, Achterhoek, for an unforgettable experience! We can’t wait to come back. 💛

🌼I’m sick in bed and just scrolled through my photos from March. It looks like it was quite a busy month – but isn’t it always?
We visited the Balloon Museum as a whole family this time, and the kids loved it! I also went to a singing workshop in Poland, which was so beautiful and nourishing. We were surprised by a bit of winter there, sang many lovely songs, and - most importantly - I got to spend time with dear friends.
Back in Berlin, we explored some museums and playgrounds. I also went to London with my son to meet my sister and her son, who’s the same age. Sadly, the cousins don’t get to see each other often enough.🫂
🌸What makes me happy right now is that spring has already arrived here - I’m so looking forward to this time!
Hope you had a lovely March too!

We recently visited the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge @museumderdinge , a museum dedicated to the design history of everyday mass-produced objects from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Even though there’s literally nothing made for kids, we still enjoyed it - looking at some truly weird items and chatting about them. My daughters brought notebooks and loved drawing their favorite finds.

The museum also offers kids’ workshops from time to time, so it’s worth checking their schedule.
🎟️ Tickets: €6 for adults, kids go free.

Tip: After your visit, head to the playground next door – Spielplatz am Auswärtigen Amt – a great spot for kids to run and play!

🌱 Recently, we visited the „Stadt, Natur, Mensch” exhibition. Although it’s quite small, it’s very well presented and offers interesting insights into the relationship between cities and nature, as well as the important role of Kleingärten. 🌿🏙 My girls enjoyed the interactive elements, and there were definitely a few things that caught our attention.

If you’re nearby and interested in urban ecology, it’s a nice stop!
🎟 Tickets: €6 for adults, €2.50 for kids.
🕒 Opening times: Tues, Thurs, Sat | 11:00–17:00
📍 Where? Bundeszentrum, Hermannstraße 186, 12049 Berlin-Neukölln

🩵 @namuk in Estonia ❄️🌲🌊🏙️
During our stay in Estonia, it was pretty chilly - and as you know, we love exploring, so we didn’t slow down 🐌. We hiked through snowy forest bogs, wandered along the seaside, and took endless strolls through the city.
And not once did Mira complain about being cold or wet - @namuk clothes really do their job, whether in the city or out in nature 🩵

Last week we visited a new installation WE FELT A STAR DYING — and wow, what an experience! ✨
The installation commissioned by @las_artfoundation is located inside Kraftwerk Berlin, a place that already makes a huge impression with its raw industrial vibe — and then comes the installation itself, where science meets art in the most magical way.

It’s such a brilliant way to introduce kids (and adults!) to quantum physics — through light, sound, movement, and even scent! My kids especially enjoyed the exploration guide made just for children, helping them dive into this surreal world in a fun, interactive way.

Good to know for families:

✅ Kids under 18 enter for free

✅ Special family visiting hours on Tuesdays from 11:00–14:00

If you’re curious about how a dying star might feel — and want to experience quantum entanglement through art — this is the place to go. Highly recommended! 🌌

📍 Location: Kraftwerk Berlin

📅 Open until: 4 May 2025

🕒 Opening Hours:

Tuesday – Friday: 15:00–21:00

Saturday & Sunday: 12:00–20:00

Family Hours: Tuesdays 11:00–14:00

🎟 Tickets: €12 (Regular) | €8 (Reduced) | Free for anyone under 18
