Döberitzer Heide – an incredible nature reserve just outside Berlin

Did you know there’s an incredible nature reserve just outside Berlin where you can spot European bison, wild horses and thousands of other fascinating species?

I’m talking about Sielmann’s Döberitzer Heide – a unique protected landscape where you can discover rare wildlife, join guided nature walks, learn about local ecosystems and simply spend a peaceful day surrounded by nature. It makes a fantastic day trip for families, and the best part is that you don’t even need a car to get there.

Döberitzer Heide – a unique landscape with an unusual history

What makes Döberitzer Heide so special is not only its incredible biodiversity but also its history.

For almost 300 years, the area served as a military training ground and remained inaccessible to the public. After military use ended in 1992, the Heinz Sielmann Foundation acquired large parts of the site in 2004 to permanently protect this extraordinary landscape.

Today, around 7,000 species of animals, plants and fungi have been recorded here, including almost 1,000 protected animal species. The landscape itself is incredibly diverse, with heathland, forests, grasslands, wetlands and inland dunes all found within one protected area.

The real stars of Döberitzer Heide live in the protected core zone. Around 130 European bison, 20 Przewalski’s horses and approximately 100 red deer help maintain the landscape naturally by grazing throughout the reserve. While visitors cannot enter the core zone itself, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about these remarkable animals during your visit.

I would definitely recommend beginning your visit at the Natur-Erlebniszentrum.

The exhibition is beautifully designed and introduces visitors to the fascinating wildlife and habitats of Döberitzer Heide. Through interactive displays, you’ll learn about the animals, insects and plants living in the reserve before heading outside to explore it yourself.

Once you’ve visited the exhibition, it’s time to head outside.

More than 55 kilometres of walking trails lead through forests, open heathland and sandy landscapes. Along the way you’ll find picnic areas, viewpoints and plenty of opportunities to simply slow down and enjoy nature.

One thing we really appreciated is how peaceful everything feels. Even though you’re only about one kilometre from Berlin’s western border, it feels like you’re much further away from the city.

Guided tours in Döberitzer Heide

Throughout the year, the Heinz Sielmann Foundation organises a wide variety of guided tours and events, covering everything from butterflies and wild bees to birds, red deer and the history of the former military training ground.

We recently joined one of the butterfly walks. It was a lovely opportunity to spot beautiful butterflies and caterpillars that we would probably have missed on our own. We also learned a lot about their fascinating life cycle and the plants they depend on.

There are plenty of other tours we’d love to join in the future. This autumn we’re hoping to come back for one of the red deer rutting excursions, and during the summer holidays the reserve is also organising family yoga sessions surrounded by nature, which sounds like such a lovely idea.

Another reason we’ll definitely be returning is the heather season. Every August and September, large parts of the landscape turn purple as the heather comes into bloom, and judging by the photos, it’s absolutely beautiful.

Döberitzer Heide is really easy to visit from Berlin

If you’re travelling by car, it’s only around a 30-minute drive from central Berlin. But even without a car, getting there is surprisingly straightforward thanks to public transport connections.

Whether you’re looking for an easy family walk, want to learn something new about local wildlife or simply escape the city for a few hours, Döberitzer Heide is well worth adding to your Berlin bucket list.
