Erzgebirge with kids: a family-friendly adventure in Germany’s Ore Mountains

If you’re looking for a nature-filled family getaway in Germany, the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) is an incredible destination to explore with kids. Nestled on the German-Czech border, this region is famous for its rich mining history, charming towns, and breathtaking landscapes. Even with unpredictable weather, there’s plenty to see and do, making it a perfect year-round destination. Here’s our experience traveling to the Erzgebirge with kids and the best places to visit!

Outdoor adventures in the Erzgebirge with kids

Exploring the forest & mushroom foraging

One of the highlights of our trip was wandering through the dense forests surrounding Johanngeorgenstadt. The kids loved spotting wild mushrooms, guided by my husband, who is an expert forager. If you visit in autumn, this is a fantastic family activity that combines adventure with learning about nature.

    Kleiner Kranichsee Nature Reserve

For a truly magical experience, we visited Kleiner Kranichsee, a breathtaking bogland with wooden walkways and an observation tower. Walking through the misty landscape felt like stepping into a fairytale. The tranquil atmosphereand unique ecosystem make it a must-visit for families who love nature walks.

Best museums & towns for families in Erzgebirge

Schwarzenberg & Perla Castrum Museum with kids

We took a day trip to Schwarzenberg, a picturesque town with medieval charm. The highlight was visiting Perla Castrum, a museum showcasing the region’s traditional woodcraft and Erzgebirge folklore. The detailed wooden carvings and hands-on exhibits made it engaging for kids and adults alike.

Annaberg-Buchholz & Manufaktur der Träume with kids

Another gem was Annaberg-Buchholz, home to the enchanting Manufaktur der Träume (Factory of Dreams)museum. This museum is dedicated to Erzgebirge folk art, wooden toys, and Christmas traditions, making it a magical experience for children.

Underground adventure: visiting a silver & uranium mine

In Johanngeorgenstadt, we explored an old silver and uranium mine, offering a glimpse into the region’s deep mining history. Although the tour wasn’t designed for young children, we still learned fascinating (and sometimes surprising) facts. The experience of descending into a disused mine was truly unforgettable!

Where to stay in Erzgebirge with kids: Jugendherberge Johanngeorgenstadt

We stayed at the Jugendherberge Johanngeorgenstadt, a family-friendly hostel set on a quiet hill surrounded by lush forests. The accommodation offered a cozy atmosphere with great food, a well-stocked common area with games, and direct access to hiking trails. It’s an ideal spot if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat away from city noise, with plenty of space for kids to play and explore.

Final thoughts: Erzgebirge is a perfect family getaway

Despite the rainy weather, our family trip to the Erzgebirge was filled with adventure, history, and nature. Whether you’re foraging for mushrooms, walking through misty bogs, discovering traditional woodcraft, or stepping into a mine, this region offers endless activities for families. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination in Germany that combines outdoor fun with cultural experiences, the Erzgebirge is a fantastic choice!
