    Berlin with kids – Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek

    Berlin with kids – Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek

Now that the weather’s getting colder and rainier, I’m constantly looking for places where we can spend time indoors – cozy, creative, and ideally free. And it might sound a bit unexpected, but the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) is exactly that kind of place – one that definitely deserves a spot on your rainy-day list in Berlin. Why? Let me tell you 😊

    Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek – a little bit of history

The AGB is part of the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin (ZLB) – the central library network that unites what used to be East and West Berlin libraries after the Wall.
The AGB itself was built in the 1950s as a gift from the United States, symbolizing freedom and access to knowledge.
(It’s a bit like how Berlin has two zoos – one from the West, one from the East – a reminder of the city’s divided past.)

Why the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek is perfect for families

Besides being home to Germany’s largest children’s and youth library (KiJuBi) with more than 130,000 books and media, you’ll also find an impressive program for all ages – from toddlers to teens.

If you’re looking for books in other languages, the KiJuBi has a great selection, too.
And if you’re missing a particular title, you can even suggest it for purchase – how amazing is that?

Fun things to do at the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek with kids

There’s so much more than books!
The library regularly hosts creative workshops, Gaming Fridays, and special holiday programs such as the Summer Reading Challenge or Herbstferien activities.

You can check their upcoming autumn program here and here are my favorites from the Herbstferienprogramm:

    Gaming & Pen-and-Paper (Dungeons & Dragons)
For teens and older kids who love fantasy worlds and storytelling – this workshop brings imagination to life! Players team up, solve challenges, and create adventures together. A great way to spend a creative afternoon away from screens.

    Musik programmieren mit Sonic Pi
How cool is this? Kids and teens can learn to create their own music through simple coding. It’s an inspiring mix of technology and creativity – and a fun way to explore programming for beginners.

Schablonendruck auf Stoff (Stencil Printing on Fabric)
A hands-on workshop where kids can design and print their own tote bags or T-shirts. Perfect for little artists who like to bring something home from their creations.

    Häkeln lernen und Geschichten hören
A calm, cozy activity for children from around 8 years – they can learn basic crochet techniques while listening to stories about nature and plants. Such a lovely slow-time idea for the holidays!

Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek – support for young readers

Children can also come to do their homework or get help from educators on site.
There’s even a Lesetraining program – short 15-minute reading sessions for kids who want to practice reading German aloud with support.

As an expat parent, I find this especially valuable – I know firsthand how tricky German pronunciation can be, not to mention teaching it to kids.

    Digital Learning

You can also explore interactive reading tools like Tiptoi, Bookii, or SAMi the reading bear, as well as Ozobots and Edurino games that introduce programming and digital learning in a playful way.

    Special spaces in Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek

In summer, the Atrium Garden becomes a peaceful reading oasis surrounded by flowers and birdsong.

In winter, something truly special appears: a real Mongolian Jurte (yurt)! Inside this round tent, storytellers from around the world share tales and legends during the “Wortschätze – Story Hours in the Jurte” series. These events are free, and children can register online. It’s a magical experience you shouldn’t miss.

Sounds cool? I know 🙂 But how to become a member of Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek?

Joining the library couldn’t be easier! Here’s how to do it:

You just walk into the library with your ID or passport and your registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). Address: Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB), Blücherplatz 1, 10961 Berlin (U1/U6 – Hallesches Tor)
Go to the information desk and simply say you’d like to register – it takes about five minutes (the most).

Adults pay €10 per year, students and trainees €5, and kids and teens join for free!
If you ever forget to bring a book back on time, don’t panic – late fees are:
€0.10 per item per day for children’s materials and €0.25 for adults.
You can easily extend your loan online through the VÖBB portal before the due date.

Once you have your library card, you can use it in all Berlin public libraries(!!!), borrow books, movies, games, and even explore their digital platforms (to borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines) like Libby and Onleihe – I actually discovered those only recently, and believe me – they’re game changers!

    Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek – your kids-friendly gem in Berlin

So if you’re looking for a warm, creative place to spend a rainy afternoon (but of course not rainy too!), the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek might surprise you. Whether it’s reading in a cozy corner, joining a fun workshop, or just letting the kids explore – it’s one of those places that remind you how family-friendly and inspiring Berlin can be.

👉First time in Berlin with kids?
Don’t miss these places 👇
They help you understand the city - not just see it.

1. TV Tower
📡 Berlin’s most iconic landmark
You’ll see it from almost everywhere - the easiest way to orient yourself in the city.
👉 If you can, book a table at the restaurant - an unforgettable experience.
2. East Side Gallery

🧱 History you can actually explain to kids
A powerful place to talk about Berlin’s divided past - outdoors, visual, and accessible.

3. Humboldt Forum

🏛 Culture + context
Many interesting exhibitions, but for a first visit I recommend Berlin Global to really understand the city.
Don’t miss the rooftop terrace - great views over Berlin.

4. Nikolaiviertel

🏘 Where Berlin began
The oldest part of the city - small streets, river views, and a completely different pace.

5. Tempelhofer Feld

✈️ Only in Berlin
How many cities have a huge public park on a former airport runway?
Berlin does - and locals truly use it.

Our best travel experiences with kids in 2025 ✨
I never really know how much we’ve seen until I pause and look back.
And every single time, I’m surprised by how much we actually experienced together 🤍
I recently went through our 2025 photo album (not going to lie - it was a struggle 😂) and picked our favourite family trips.
You’ll probably notice one thing: nature plays the main role here 🌿
Open spaces, beautiful views, and that kind of calm that gently settles the heart 🌊⛰️
✨ Scandinavia
Everything feels in balance there. It honestly seems impossible to choose a wrong destination. If you find good connections - just go. You will rest 🤍
🇸🇪 Sweden
Karlskrona and the Stockholm Archipelago, where we truly slowed down. And the Swedish rocks… they have a special place in my heart 🪨
🇩🇰 Denmark
The Wadden Sea 🌊
The tides, the emptiness, the space - a deeply moving experience.
🇳🇴 Norway
Like a postcard come to life: fjords, water everywhere, mountains. Simply spectacular.
🌴 Florida
An unexpected choice, driven by cheap flights - until I saw manatees 🐋
We focused fully on nature: mangroves, wildlife, quiet wonder. We skipped theme parks on purpose 🤍
⛰️ Seefeld
Mountains, so many family-friendly activities, and no boredom at all. Fishing together was a completely new - and beautiful - experience 🎣
🐉 Furth im Wald
Arrived exhausted, without a plan… and discovered an impressive dragon robot that truly leaves you speechless. Add nature, gardens and lovely attractions - perfect holidays 🌿
What were your travel highlights this year?
Time to start dreaming about 2026 ✨✈️

    Hello from @gruene_woche 👋
And this year is extra special – 100 years of Grüne Woche 🎉
Such a perfect event for curious families 🤍 Why? Because it’s packed with interesting information, presentations, workshops, new technologies and hands-on experiences - you really need to see it for yourself 😍
The kids had an absolute blast!
VR experiences, quizzes, spin-the-wheel games, milking an (artificial ;)) cow and even assisting with a sheep birth on a model 🐑
You can taste food from all over the world, get inspired for future travels – or simply fall in love with apples from Südtirol 🍎

We spent hours there yesterday and still didn’t manage to see everything - which says it all. This place is really special.

✨ Our personal family highlights:

🌸 Flower Hall 2.2a
I always admire this hall – it truly feels like stepping into spring.
For the 100th anniversary, it’s designed in a 1920s style inspired by Babylon Berlin, with early bloomers, decorations and a large fountain creating a magical atmosphere.

🚜 Hall 3.2 – ErlebnisBauernhof
An absolute hit with kids!
An interactive treasure hunt with learning stations about animals, nature, technology and soil. Kids collect tokens and exchange them for a drink and a souvenir cup. Tractor sitting, beekeeping and real farm insights included.

✨ Hall 7.2C
We took photos in a booth, tried a Madagascar VR experience and spin-the-wheel games. Here you can learn how food security and fair production work worldwide – including insights into the cocoa supply chain and a 360° film about the connection between nutrition and climate.

🌍 Hall 27
Probably where we spent the most time!
Mira tried climbing activities, while Roma joined creative workshops and a rally – collecting points and earning a little jar of honey 🍯
So hands-on, creative and engaging for kids.
There is so much more… we kept stopping to discover new attractions all the time.
One thing is guaranteed: you will not be bored at Grüne Woche 🤍✨

📅 16–25 January 2026
🕙 Daily 10:00–18:00
🎟️ Tickets: from €17 online, family ticket €39, kids under 6 free
🚇 Messe Berlin – easy access by S- & U-Bahn

🤑 Free (or very cheap) things to do with kids in Berlin 🤍

Every time I look for ideas on how to spend time with my kids, I’m honestly amazed by how many free or low-cost options Berlin offers.
And at the same time I feel like not everyone knows about them - so here’s a little cheat sheet from me to you 🫶

🐐 Kinderbauernhöfe & Abenteuerspielplätze
Free activities like feeding animals, crafts or just playing under the supervision of educators.
Usually free, donations welcome. Check what’s near you – the programmes change often.
Examples: @asp.kolle.37 @jugmoho

🏊 Vereine (sports clubs)
How much do you pay for swimming lessons?
I pay €30 for 3 months – because my daughter is in a city-funded club.
There are Vereine for almost every sport. Waiting lists happen, but it’s often so worth it.
Just search: “Verein Berlin + sport”.

📚 Libraries
Your local library is a hidden gem 💛
Free activities for kids (and adults): homework help, coding, workshops, movie screenings…
@zlb_berlin @voebb_de

🏠 Familienzentren / Stadtteilzentren
Think of them as neighbourhood meeting places.
Free or very affordable activities for kids and adults.
One of my favourites: @weinmeisterhaus or @freizeithausammauerpark – also great during school holidays.
Each district has its own list.

🌱 Umweltkalender Berlin @umweltkalenderberlin
So many free workshops and events around nature & sustainability – easy to filter for free stuff.

🎭 Kinderkulturkalender @lkj_berlin
Another great calendar with amazing kids’ events - many free or super affordable. Check the website!

🏛 Free museums & exhibition spaces
Berlin really delivers here:
@spore.initiative @anohaberlin BauBau @gropiusbau @futuriumd @humboldtforum @drive.berlin and many many more

🎟 Berliner FamilienPass @jugendkulturservice
Costs only €6 and pays for itself so quickly.
I’ve been using it for years - discounts and inspiration for new places.

💻 Free coding & tech for older kids
Jugend hackt Lab Berlin, @tumoberlin , @tueftellab – fantastic (and free!) programmes

And now I’m curious 👀
How do you organise kids’ time in Berlin without spending a fortune?
Share your tips in the comments 🤍

🎟 Berliner FamilienPass @jugendkulturservice
Costs only €6 and pays for itself so quickly.
I’ve been using it for years - discounts and inspiration for new places.

💻 Free coding & tech for older kids
Jugend hackt Lab Berlin, @tumoberlin , @tueftellab – fantastic (and free!) programmes

And now I’m curious 👀
How do you organise kids’ time in Berlin without spending a fortune?

@zlb_berlin @voebb_de

🏠 Familienzentren / Stadtteilzentren
Think of them as neighbourhood meeting places.
Free or very affordable activities for kids and adults.
One of my favourites: @weinmeisterhaus or @freizeithausammauerpark – also great during school holidays.
Each district has its own list.

🌱 Umweltkalender Berlin @umweltkalenderberlin
So many free workshops and events around nature & sustainability – easy to filter for free stuff.

🎭 Kinderkulturkalender @lkj_berlin
Another great calendar with amazing kids’ events - many free or super affordable. Check the website!

🏛 Free museums & exhibition spaces

⛄️ Today’s plan was to go for a longer walk somewhere in Brandenburg.
But in the morning I saw a reel on @stadtpampa.berlin from Müggelsee, and well… plans changed 😉

Walking on the frozen surface of Berlin’s largest lake is an experience like no other – it was absolutely incredible 🤍

Yes, it’s cold and windy, so dress warmly, don’t forget a thermos with hot tea ☕️ and keep moving – it really helps 😉

If you have more time, definitely bring a sled and turn it into a proper winter walk ❄️
We walked up Großer Müggelberg, went sledding, then continued towards Teufelssee. There’s a lovely educational trail and a playground there – such a pleasant area for a family walk.

🚍 How we got there: from S-Köpenick you can take bus 169 (every ~20 minutes), which gets you close to all these spots.

Such a beautiful winter experience – I feel a lot of gratitude that I could have experienced it✨

❗️Always check local conditions before stepping onto the ice and use common sense – safety first.

When I first saw photos of Pulpit Rock, I honestly felt scared.
My first thought was: how would you do this hike with kids?
In my head, a huge cliff without railings felt extremely dangerous. And while it is a place where you need to be careful and use common sense, this hike turned out to be absolutely incredible - and very much doable with children, even in winter, if you prepare well.
🅿️ Practical information:
The trail starts at the parking area at Preikestolen BaseCamp. During the main season you can get there by bus, but in winter you’ll need a car. Parking costs around €30 for the whole day.
The hike is 8 km in total (there and back).
The trail is not technically difficult, but there is quite a lot of uphill walking and stone steps. The views along the way - and the final reward at Pulpit Rock - make every step worth it.
🥾 How to prepare:
Good clothing and proper footwear are essential, especially with kids. Children need to be comfortable, warm and safe to enjoy a hike.
The kids wore clothes from our favourite outdoor brand @namuk - functional, beautiful and made to keep them warm, comfortable and safe on the trail. Their winter boots were cosy and perfect for hiking.
🥪 Bring food and warm drinks - for energy and motivation. Nothing makes kids (and adults) hungry like a proper hike.
Is it dangerous?
Before the final part, there is a short section where the trail runs next to a drop. Even with my fear of heights, I didn’t feel particularly scared. Holding hands with the kids and keeping them on the rock side makes a big difference.
🌄 And Pulpit Rock itself?
The views are absolutely breathtaking. I didn’t go right to the edge, while others did - and we even witnessed a proposal (she said yes 😉). As always, it’s all about common sense.
👧👦 If you’re hiking with kids, take breaks when they need them and talk about the place and surroundings - it keeps them engaged along the way.
🤍 I truly recommend this hike. The views are stunning almost the entire way - and it is so, so worth it.

Isn’t this the coziest time of the year? ✨
Soft lights at home, the Christmas tree glowing, Christmas movies, cacao, winter books… and of course cosy blankets 🤍

We recently received the most beautiful blankets from @jowollina , and we are all absolutely in love.
They are warm, incredibly soft and just so beautiful. I honestly had a hard time choosing - every single design is stunning 😍

December is one of my favourite months, and these blankets added 100% more coziness to our home 💙
We love curling up under them on the sofa - and I even took them to the forest to show you how gorgeous they look outdoors too 🌲✨

Which one is your favourite?
Make sure to check out all the designs on the @jowollina website and treat yourself to a little extra warmth and beauty this winter 🤍

🎄If you’re in the mood for a calmer kind of Christmas activity this year… 🎄
Have you ever been to Museum Knoblauchhaus @stadtmuseumberlin ?
I hadn’t - and I also didn’t know it turns into a Weihnachtshaus every Advent ✨

It’s small, a bit hidden and very Berlin - and suddenly you’re walking through living rooms from 200 years ago.
Old songs, handwritten cards, festive décor - just a quiet December atmosphere, without the rush.

There’s also “Beziehungsweise Familie” exhibition at the moment, showing how the idea of “family” has changed over time. Short, accessible, and great if your kids like to ask questions.

For children:
🎧 kids’ audioguide
📝 rally with questions so they actually explore
🛠 free print workshops every Advent Saturday across the street (Museumslabor)

And few words about the workshop - we enjoyed it a lot! I’m not very craft-skilled, but it was calm, friendly and hands-on in the best way. No pressure, just making something in December because it feels nice to do so 🤍

📍 Museum Knoblauchhaus, Nikolaiviertel
🎄 Weihnachtshaus: Nov 29 – Jan 4
👧 Kids & teens under 18: free
🎫 Adults: 5€
📅 Dec 14: Snow Queen paper theatre (4+) (tickets online)
