If you’re visiting Berlin with kids and looking for something a little different from the usual museums, PETRI Berlin is a place you should definitely have on your list.
Located in Mitte, PETRI Berlin opened in 2025 and is still relatively unknown – but it’s one of the most interesting and thoughtfully designed museums we’ve visited recently.
What makes PETRI Berlin special?
PETRI Berlin is not just a traditional museum. It’s an archaeology lab and exhibition space combined, built on the foundations of a medieval Latin school. The concept is simple but powerful: instead of only showing finished objects, the museum lets you see how archaeology actually works.
Through glass walls, open workshops, and project spaces, visitors can follow the full process – from discovering objects in the ground to restoring, researching, and finally displaying them.
This makes the whole experience feel much more alive and real.
Visiting PETRI Berlin with kids
I’ll be honest – archaeology doesn’t always sound like the easiest topic for children. But PETRI Berlin does an amazing job making it engaging and accessible.
When we left, my daughter said she wants to become an archaeologist one day – which probably says more than any review.
Here’s what makes it especially great for families:
- An activity booklet for children at the entrance
- A small “guide character” (a little worm) leading kids through the exhibition
- Plenty of hands-on elements on every floor
- Interactive stations and short videos explaining archaeological work
- The possibility to watch real archaeologists working in glass labs
It’s a very interactive experience – children are not just looking, they are exploring.

PETRI Berlin – space designed to feel good
One thing I personally appreciated a lot is the design of the museum.
It’s bright, spacious, and very calm. Nothing feels overwhelming, which is often a problem in museums with kids. Everything is clearly presented, and it’s easy to move through the space at your own pace.
At the very top, there’s also a rooftop terrace with deck chairs, which is a perfect spot to take a break after exploring.
